On 20 November, President Abdullah Gül ratified Law No. 5710 on “the founding and running of nuclear power stations and energy sales”.

According to the new law, three nuclear power stations will be built between 2010 and 2020, adding up to 5,000 megawatt installed capacity. In addition, coal power stations will also be supported.

Before the law was passed in parliament, the Platform Against Nuclear Power had sent a letter with 100,000 signatures to the MPs.

The law was passed in the previous legislative period, but had been vetoed by 10th President Ahmet Necdet Sezer. (TK/AG)
